Why Bother?

Sidewalk covered with leaves a month ago

October sidewalk covered with leaves

I was outside the condo, minding my own business, raking leaves, when a man walked by, shook his head in disapproval, and said, “Why bother?”

Could he be talking to me?  There was no one else around, just me with my rake and a big compost bin nearby.

Then he spoke louder and directed his words my way, “Why bother?  Don’t you know more leaves will just keep coming down?”

His comment was irritating!  Is this the attitude he carries as he goes through life?  His own logic could be the end of him!

I should have said, “I’ll bet you’re the kind of guy who doesn’t make his bed after getting up in the morning. Why would you?  You’ll just get back into it again at the end of the day.”

Or I could have said, “Why take a shower?  You’ll just start sweating again.  Why brush your teeth?  You’re bound to eat again within a few hours!”

But really, this is the kind of guy I’d like to catch at dinner time, “Why bother eating?  Don’t you know you’ll just end up getting hungry again!”

When I was done with my work outside, I went in the house and told Rick about my brief encounter with the Why-Bother-Man.  We had a few good laughs and continued to come up with good replies to such a silly comment.

Readers, I’d love to hear from you with some other “Why Bother” questions to ponder and scoff at!!!  (why bother to stretch, you’ll just stiffen up again???? etc etc)

    Hmmm – how about this:

Why bother breathing, you’ll just exhale it all.

your “comment” was best. Ignore. He was talking to himself and not worth answering.
